Health Effects

GenX (HFPO-DA) was created as a "safer" replacement for PFOA but has been linked to liver damage, kidney problems, cancer in animal studies, and immune system effects. It is concerning because it was designed to replace a known toxic chemical.

How HFPO-DA (GenX) Gets Into Water

Used in manufacturing fluoropolymers as a replacement for PFOA. Major contamination found near chemical plants, particularly in North Carolina and West Virginia.

How to Remove HFPO-DA (GenX)

Reverse osmosis is the most effective treatment. Some ion exchange resins can also remove GenX. Standard activated carbon filters are less effective against this compound.

Recommended: Reverse Osmosis (RO)

Reverse osmosis systems remove up to 99% of PFAS compounds. Recommended for homes with detected PFAS.

Up to 99% PFAS removal
